Glazed Wall Tile Care and Maintenance
Normal maintenance of glazed wall tile used on counter tops and light duty floors is wiping with a damp cloth or sponge. Use of all-purpose household cleaners or window cleaners is acceptable so long as any cleaner residue is removed with a clear water rinse (cleaner residue may leave a film that dulls the appearance of the tile which attracts and holds dirt).
Shower areas generally require more periodic cleaning in order to remove soap scum, body oils, and hard water deposit buildup. Normally, shower areas may be cleaned by spraying an all-purpose cleaner on the tile, letting it stand for 3-5 minutes and then rinsing it off. A white vinegar and water solution should remove most hard water spots. If the tiled area has been neglected, use of a commercial tile cleaner is available from Ceramic Tile International.
Mildew present in a wet area such as a shower stall or tub shower may usually be removed by scrubbing with a commercial tile cleaner or commercial fungicide. Chlorine bleach or ammonia may also be used. If the discoloration remains, a bleaching agent (chlorine bleach or hydrogen peroxide) wiped over the area should remove it. All areas should be rinsed well and wiped dry with a clean soft towel.
Mildew may be prevented through providing adequate ventilation to showers and other damp areas. Increasing air circulation by leaving the shower door open will help to remove moisture and speed drying.
Glazed Floor Tile Care and Maintenance
Normal maintenance for glazed floor tile is dry mopping or damp mopping (with clear water). It should not be necessary to use any type of detergent on a glazed tile floor since the detergent can leave a soap film that will give a dull appearance to the tile.
If a cleaner must be used on a glazed tile floor, a commercial tile cleaner or solution of soap less detergent may be used. The surface should be scrubbed, thoroughly rinsed with clean water, and dried.
Unglazed Floor Tile Care and Maintenance
Unglazed mosaic, porcelain, or quarry floor tile can be maintained by dry mopping or damp mopping. Heavy duty cleaning can be done with a solution of soap less detergent, followed by thoroughly rinsing with clear water.
As an unglazed floor ages, a patina forms on the surface which gives a soft shine and keeps the floor looking fresh longer.
Natural Stone Maintenance
Use of a dust mop on a daily basis to remove dirt and sand will aid in keeping a natural stone floor looking new and prevent scratching. Certain stones such as marble periodically, must be cleaned, sealed, and polished using products specifically formulated for marble. The severity of the traffic pattern will dictate the frequency of the maintenance
Some minor staining can be eliminated using a commercial marble poultice, while others will require special poultices formulated by an experienced marble professional.
